Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group Opens Marta

Marta, Danny Meyer’s new restaurant from the Maialino team—Executive Chef/Partner Nick Anderer and Managing Partner Terry Coughlin—is now open and serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Helming the kitchen alongside Anderer is Chef de Cuisine Joe Tarasco, who helped open Maialino in 2009 and had previously spent nearly three years at Gramercy Tavern. Tarasco was most recently Maialino’s Executive Sous Chef before joining the opening team of Marta. General Manager Peter Juusola, formerly Director of Operations at Flour Bakery in Boston, will oversee front of house operations.

The Marta Lunch and Dinner menus feature seasonal salads and fried snacks, such as crispy heirloom zucchini sticks and potato-mortadella croquettes, as well as a few starters from the wood-burning oven like rabbit meatballs with ricotta and charred scallion. Also from the wood-burning ovens, the kitchen turns out thin, Roman-inspired, crackly-crusted pizzas, both traditional types like the Capricciosa with artichokes, olives, prosciutto, and a coddled egg, and some more interpretive and market-driven such as the Mercato, with okra, corn, and ricotta salata. Dishes cooked alle brace—or over open embers on the restaurant’s custom, eight-foot long Grillworks Infierno—include Trout Saltimbocca and Abbacchio Misto, a mixed lamb board with sausage, chops, and shoulder. For breakfast, the kitchen offers house-made pastries and breads, some oven-baked egg dishes, and other wood-fired specialties such as a Semolina Pancake baked in a cast iron crock.

The beverage program features a full list of Italian wines with a focus on value, as well as an exciting lineup of sparkling wines and Champagne. In addition, Marta offers a robust beer selection emphasizing local craft beers on draft and sought-after Italian bottled beers, and fresh takes on Italian-inspired cocktails.

The open kitchen takes center-stage in the 150-seat space, with two black-tiled Mugnaini wood-fired ovens opposite a marble dining counter, from which guests can watch the pizzaolos in action. The dining room, designed by Selldorf Architects, integrates warmth and communal energy with a classic Italian influence, featuring a mix of banquette seating and walnut butcher block tables, as well as a half-circle blackened copper bar.

Marta is located adjacent to the Martha Washington hotel’s lobby, and has a street-level entrance on 29th Street. The restaurant is open throughout the day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, from 7:00am—11:30pm, with weekend brunch launching soon. Marta is now accepting reservations, and a large portion of seating is set aside for walk-ins.
